Charlie Sheen is reportedly making a shocking announcement on Nov. 17 that he has been secretly battling HIV for several years but he’s now ready to share his story with the world. His condition was reportedly confirmed by publicist Howard Bragman to People.com, who says Charlie is ‘getting treatment’ for his disease.
Charlie Sheen is HIV-positive, according to TMZ who broke the story earlier today. The 50-year-old actor will sit down with Today Show‘s Matt Lauer and make a “revealing personal announcement” during their Nov. 17 show. The TMZ report claims that Charlie will go public with his HIV-positive status. The actor, who was once married to Denise Richards, has remained out of the spotlight for the past year. Now after rumblings in publications for months, the former Two and a Half Men star reportedly wants to tell the world about his personal battle with the disease.
RadarOnline.com and The National Enquirer were the first outlets to report the shocking news about the actor’s health but he has yet to confirm it. The reports claimed that Charlie had a “long history” of sleeping with porn stars and strippers and that he had spent millions trying to cover up his allegedly HIV-positive status. “Charlie thought he was indestructible and took no precautions — even though he was indulging in high-risk sex practices,” a close friend of Charlie’s told RadarOnline.com. The Enquirer claims that the actor slept with over 5,000 women and that he confessed his “illness” to over “a dozen sources.”
“Charlie had sex with multiple partners since learning his HIV status without informing them of his potentially deadly HIV infection,” one source told The Enquirer. Another source claims he doesn’t know how he contracted the disease but “has been tortured by the thought that his acting genius will be forgotten. Charlie’s worst fear is that he will be remembered not as a great actor, but as someone who contracted the disease.”
Charlie’s status was seemingly confirmed by People magazine. Howard Bragman, top Hollywood publicist and crisis manager, was approached by people close to Charlie six months ago, reportsPeople, in hopes to deal with the crisis. However, supposedly Howard did not deal with Charlie directly. Howard said that he was told Charlie “is getting treatment, and a lot of people in his life know about it.”
“It’s been going on for quite awhile. He’s not necessarily comfortable talking about it. It was very hard to get up the courage for him to talk about it,” Howard told People. “I’ve known about this a long time, it’s not a surprise to me. I feel very sorry for his pain. And I hope it’s used as a teachable moment for the world. This is a disease that can affect anyone.”
Howard also added, “The interview could open up a lot of sympathy for [Charlie,] but he has to be concerned about a fear of litigation from former sexual partners. You don’t take that lightly.”
Charlie has five children, Cassandra Jade Estevez, 30, with his high school girlfriend, Paula Profit. He and Denise have two girls, Sam J. Sheen, 11, and 10-year-old Lola Rose Sheen. He and his ex-wife, Brooke Mueller have twin boys, Bob and Max Sheen that are six-years-old. Brooke responded to HollywoodLife.com‘s inquiry on Charlie’s health with “no comment.” We have also reached out to Charlie’s rep for comment and are waiting to hear back.HollywoodLifers, we think Charlie is so brave for sharing his story and our thoughts go out to him and his family.
